Aquaclean is experienced in cleaning Grade l and ll listed buildings. Cleaning windows and clearing gutters on buildings that are often hundreds of years old creates unique challenges and requires sensitive solutions.

When asked to attend to a listed building we know to bring specialist equipment in and ensure that we do not affect the window, lead or wood frames as well as the surrounding masonry which is likely to be very old. This means that cleaning particularly dirty windows on a listed house does not mean using firmer brushes and more pressure – which is likely to cause damage – but rather taking more time and care. Cleaning these buildings should never be rushed.

Some of the guttering on listed buildings can be very old too. We come across aged lead guttering too so we need to use methods that place the least possible pressure on the gutter and its supports. We use a special gutter vac which gently, but effectively, removes moss, leaves, and debris from the gutters, ensuring there is no damage caused and leaving a lasting effect. 

When cleaning listed buildings we need to go further and act with real sensitivity. The right materials and tools need to be used to avoid staining or unnecessary stress to the construction. Also, when using special access equipment, we take great care to protect the building to avoid placing any kind of load on architectural features.

Taking great care is not just about when we clean the building itself. Many of these listed buildings are situated on carefully maintained grounds which are expensive to maintain and are also often open to the public. We, therefore, ensure our work is sympathetic to the grounds, staff, and members of the public. We use the latest gutter cleaning technology to get the most effective results with the gutter vac system, which is a specialised and powerful industrialised wet and dry vacuum. We can clean up to 5 storeys without the use of ladders, cherry pickers and scaffolding.

All kinds of debris, including litter, can be found blocking gutters. One common problem with gutters is plant growth. This can creep into the brickwork and create substantial root or branch systems. The weight from that plant growth can cause strain on, and eventual breakage of gutter fixings.

We always make sure that we are thorough when emptying out gutters to ensure they will last for a period of time.

Blocked gutters can be a significant cause of dirty windows, especially to business buildings so for larger buildings we recommend checking your gutters more frequently.

When gutters stop working efficiently, the overflow of water not only has the potential to soak the windows underneath them but also to carry much of the dirt and debris down with them, which will in turn make the windows much dirtier than normal.
